"It was a great day. A student came to see me at the end of the day to order the book and when I asked him about the day he said, "It was awesome - the best day ever!" I think Glen does a fantastic job 'entertaining' the students but more importantly motivating them and inspiring them to make positive changes in their lives.
The seminar was amazing. To have 70 year 11 boys and girls sitting quietly, listening intently and participating all day is a feat in itself. The students were inspired to make positive changes and are still, three weeks later, talking about what Glen said."

Leeanne Johnston-Bryan, Pulteney Grammar School Adelaide SA

"You presented your Day of Hope seminar at my school...and I would really like to thank you. Senior years of high school have placed tremendous pressure on me to know exactly what I want to do when I leave school. At the end of the seminar I looked back over the notes I wrote whilst listening to you speak. I had written a single word in the centre of the page and must have drawn over the letters a dozen times. INSPIRE. I cant believe I had written the word so many times without recognising what it was. My dream.

I want to thank you so much for impacting my life in such a positive way and helping me to discover my purpose in life. Not only did your words of motivation impact me but also your actions. I have discovered my dream, to motivate and inspire others with my passion for life, just as you did for me."

MALE BY BIRTH MAN BY CHOICE

LENGTH OF MODULE:   2 HOURS*
IDEAL FOR YEARS:     9, 10, 11, 12

RATIONALE

Men of Honour exists to educate boys on the lesser talked about sexual health issues.

This module is concerned with the health and wellbeing of young men. It allows participants to examine the nature of a young mans identity and the developmental and relational factors that most influence their lives.

It promotes critical thinking and the need to make positive lifestyle choices in six key areas: nutrition, exercise, money, sex, pornography and masturbation.

While many young men have made clear and informed decisions regarding the first three (nutrition exercise, money), the remaining three (sex, pornography, masturbation) the potentially most damaging areas, are left untalked about, rather joked about between young men.

Men of Honour provides a foundation of knowledge and understanding in a safe, single gender environment. Participants are empowered to make and stand by their own personal convictions that reflect a new-found respect they hold for themselves and for others.

AIMS

The aim of Men of Honour is to educate males on how to decisively and successfully transition from boy to man.

OBJECTIVES
 Knowledge and Understanding
 Values and Attitudes
  Participants will;
 Participants will;
identify physical changes both seen and unseen to body systems that happen to males as they mature.  identify strategies to manage feelings and emotions, eg, discussing concerns with significant others, accessing advice and support.
enhance their sense of self, and have the confidence to live their unique life.
acknowledge that a significant positive and active male role model (ie: father or guardian) is vital to the development of a young man and such influence should be esteemed.
critically reflect on their own personal health and health behaviours including both positive and negative influences and indicate future courses of action for better health.
recognise the factors that contribute to positive sexual relationships, eg respect, honesty, trust and loyalty.

OUTCOMES
 A participant:
  -    recognizes that physical changes are a normal part of adolescence.
  -    uses appropriate strategies to manage feelings and emotions in a range of situations.
  -    accepts individual strengths, abilities and characteristics to confidently engage in all life activities.
  -    identifies known people within a network of trusted adults, with whom it is appropriate to express and discuss personal feelings.
  -    develops and apply the skills that enable them to adopt and promote healthy lifestyles.
  -    adopts and applies decision making processes and justifies their choices in increasingly demanding contexts.

MODULE DESCRIPTION

MEN OF HONOUR highlights the power of an individual’s choice in the areas of exercise, nutrition, money and sex. It discusses the portrayal of men in the media and the subsequent affects on male identity and behaviour.
With sexual behaviour being one of the most important decisions for young men, MEN OF HONOUR provides an opportunity for them to make life-changing decisions now. Glen tackles difficult issues head on including:

• The importance of well balanced parenting
• The role of fathers
• Masturbation
• Relationships
• Pornography
• Forming sexual identity

Men are not at the mercy of their bodies and hormones. It is essential that they are provided with the information to empower them to take control and make right decisions. MEN OF HONOUR creates a safe and open environment where students can hear answers to the tough questions that all young men have on their minds, but are frequently unable to ask. A humorous, frank and BOYS ONLY program that gets straight to the centre of the issue surrounding boys and sexuality.

It is a pleasure to respond to Glen’s seminar on “Men of Honour”. I think it is best summed up by saying that Glen held 180 Yr 9 and 10 boys in the palm of his hands for 2 hours where they all took notes and listened without any teacher having to supervise in any way. The following day we had multiple requests to our Librarian to buy Glen’s books for them and every boy and teacher I spoke to told me how worthwhile, informative and necessary that the seminar was for our boys. It is now seen as a “must” for our Yr 9-12 young men as it complements our Pastoral Program so well.

Debra Ferguson, Assistant Principal, Mackillop Catholic College, Warnervale, March 2010

The Men of Honour program which was delivered at Mareeba State High was the best program of its type which I have seen. The speaker was able to capture the interest of boys and maintain this for a period of two hours. The topics were well targeted for the boys to follow and also provided for the topics to be followed up by interested male staff. Thankyou.

Serge Venturato, Mareeba State High School QLD, June 2009

Keeping 200 boys interested for two hours, making them laugh AND teaching them what it means to be a man is a difficult feat. However, it was made to look easy by Glen. Every student took a valuable piece of knowledge away with them.

Jon Sculthorpe, Homebush Boys High School, May 2009

In August 2008 Glen presented his 'Men Of Honour' seminar to Year 8-12 boys at Southport State High School QLD. Here is some feedback from the day:

PRINCIPAL: We thought we were giving you a very tough gig with 420 boys from year 8 to 12. Very impressed with how you took it in your stride and kept them with you all the way. More than impressive!

STAFF: Glen i found your presentation to be exceptional and of a very high standard. I have seen the 'Maestro' Anthony Robbins speak before and found his presentation to be great, though yours more engaging and emotive. I particularly enjoyed the Men of Honour idea as I believe that male youth have lost their way somewhat in just what it means to be a MAN. Thank you for coming to our school and addressing both student and staff, it was superb. Callum James

STUDENT: I wish my dad could talk to me about stuff like that. You made so much sense.

STAFF: A breath of fresh air for male students in school. The fatherless society in which many boys live is definately creating social problems of mammoth proportions. The seminar is very motivating and inspiring and general feedback amongst the students have been positive. Scott Toohey

PARENT: My son has ADHD and he is very hard to keep still. He came home and told me that he could have listened to you for hours and he throught what you talked about was so cool. And i found out from Mr S that he did sit and listen attentively through the whole talk. Amazing.

STAFF: I overheard a couple of boys saying how 'cool' it was to have someone speak to them in what they described as their own language. I butted in and asked what they liked best and basically they were impressed by Glen's frankness and willingness to share his personal struggle.

STUDENT: Thanks for coming, you were awesome. I learned a lot of stuff about how to think about things. You're right, that most of what we hear about sex and stuff is from other boys and we all make up stories so its not real, but your stuff was real.

DISCIPLINE DETERMINATION TEAMWORK

Every aspect of an individuals’ life is governed by a standard that is indefinitely etched into their neural pathways. Consequently, if one lives by that same un-changing standard day in day out, they will end up getting the same un-changed result that they did yesterday. An athletes’ success is determined by their ability to conquer their mental limitations and produce a different result, time and time again.

THE MENTAL ATHLETE challenges and stretches an athletes psychological capacity, helping them to identify and confront areas of limitation and develop their peak performance.

THE MENTAL ATHLETE will fuel young athletes with coaching on:

• mental toughness
• discipline
• developing focus before events
• conquering fear & past defeats
• performance under pressure

Glen’s high-level athletic background, sporting expertise and his ability to motivate provide the perfect ingredients to give sporting teams their winning edge. Whether it be your first fifteen rugby team, your rowing eights or your athletics squad, OXYGEN FACTORY will align the program content and illustrations with your particular sport.

After his teams experience with this program the Rowing Coach from a Melbourne Boys School said:

LONG TERM
- Gives boys the realisation that anything is possible
- Gives faith to boys that are battling academically that they can row and do well at school.
- Gives boys the realisation that success is not always instant. You have to work at it

SHORT TERM
- Created a buzz in the boatshed
- The night after your presentation a record number of PB's were performed on the rowing machine.

Researchers for HCF and Beyond Blue estimated that in 2003 over 100,000 children and adolescents in Australia suffered from depression and around 20,000 prescriptions for anti-depressants were issued per month to people under the age of 19. Averaged out, this points to approximately 40 students in every high school in Australia currently battling depression.
It is no surprise that when OXYGEN FACTORY asks students what topics they would like to learn more about, a stand out response centres around depression and its devastating impact on the individual, friends and family.
Speaking from personal testimony, Jane Hennessy will deliver an important message to make the hearts of her audience smile. Jane tackles the issues that govern depression – identifying emotions, controlling behaviour, dealing with grief and loss, and making positive mental health choices.
Smile is an interactive, powerful and uplifting seminar that will demystify depression and encourage students on their journey to health, happiness and healing.

"I would highly recommend Jane Hennessy's SMILE presentation and from feedback, so would our Year 10 and 11 students. Jane's warmth and strong inspirational skills enabled her to develop a positive connection with students. Jane was able to normalise depression, while identifying it as a serious mental health issue. She also provided some great strategies to help all students nurture and protect themselves from the turbulence of adolescence and life."

Kim Thompson - School Counsellor, Arden Anglican School NSW

"Jane engaged the students straight away and we got lots of positive feedback about her presentation.  I was also pleased to see that her advice on depression was evidence based and practical. She drew the kids in with personal stories but also gave them a positive and effective message."

"It is amazing to see the effect Glen has on the students he speaks to. For many they feel that they are being made to listen to yet another speaker and appear disinterested, maybe only at the seminar as it means time off class. Yet each time I have heard Glen it is fascinating to watch the change in attitude - the laughter, and the leaning in to catch every word. He has the rare ability to make teenagers really listen, often for extended periods of time, and to take aboard what they have heard. Thank you for inspiring our students yet again."
